Coaching Corner: I've got nothing!
By "Coach" Marilou Butcher Roth
Each Thursday I place myself in front of my computer and decide what topic seems the most suitable for the Buzz. Today nothing, and I mean nothing is popping into my head. I looked around my office at my myriad of books up on the shelves hoping for inspiration. They merely sat in well-bound determination, and no help was given! Well, I ask myself, how can my lack of direction be of service? Surely, others have had a point where they were not able to access desired information in their brain.
Aha! That’s the ticket! Others have faced moments in their lives when their best efforts have left them without the answer they desperately sought...and, I am here to tell you that this is not the catastrophe you might think it is.
How do you handle hitting a mental wall? What do you do when the answers you are looking for are eluding you? Do you hunker down, tighten up and attempt to force your brain into action? I know that method has been tried by many, including myself, without much success.
What if you didn’t force or fret? What if you just let it be, trusting that you will get the information you need, or at least a direction to find it. Face it, sometimes we do not have the answers that we want and that can, indeed, be frustrating. Here’s the thing...the more we focus on the fact that we don’t have answers, the less likely they are to come. Period.
The next time you find yourself in this position, relax, and, take some deep breaths. Get curious. Perhaps you distract yourself with something else for a bit. Be gentle, be kind to yourself and I promise you that things will be much easier.
I guess I did have something after all!
