Coaching Corner: Where is your dial?
By "Coach" Marilou Butcher Roth
One of the main premises of coaching is that each of us have our own best answers. Yes -- each of us has within us the ability to access what we individually need to best navigate the waters of our life. You may be shaking your head in denial at this point, or, you may be wondering how this magical feat can come into play in your own life.
To access these often-illusive answers, we must be in a place internally where we can actually hear. If you are filling your brain with countless “to do’s,” judgements and similar distracting thoughts, you will not have the awareness required to be tuned in. However, if you allow yourself to move into appreciation, and put your attention more on what you want rather than what you see that you don’t like, your answers will be far more easily found.
Undoubtedly, some of you have been following the boys' soccer team in Thailand who were trapped in a cave since late June. The boys' coach had tremendous exposure to meditation, a practice that he presented to the boys to help them through this very difficult time. Establishing a practice of mindfulness can assist each of us in countless ways. This doesn’t have to be something crazy. What about getting yourself into a quiet place and following your breath as it slowly moves through you...in...and...out. Just this simple exercise will calm your body as well as your mind.
When you can get yourself more into a state of calm, you will be tuned in for your own inspired thoughts. Most of us think about what we want and then move directly to GO! I suggest that you get yourself into a better feeling place and be open to the inspired actions that come to you -- it is truly more productive than DO, DO, DO and GO, GO, GO! You will be doing, and going, but from a different place.
Think of yourself in terms of a radio dial. You can only access a station if your dial is set to that station. Where is your dial set?
