Coaching Corner: Kick yourself in the butt!
By Marilou Butcher Roth, Master Coach
“People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing. That’s why we recommend it daily.” - Zig Ziglar
Motivation is such an interesting and sometimes illusive part of our lives. There are times when we jump right out of bed, moving eagerly and swiftly towards our object of attention. Then, there are those other times when the idea of accomplishment proves to be hiding out in a closet somewhere -- and the closet is locked -- and you have no idea where to find the key!
Well people, that key is YOU! Yes,I realize that we can be motivated at some point, by others, what they say or do, influencing our thoughts and actions. Let’s be real, if we don’t keep up with the ideas and enthusiasm that has been presented to us, that motivation wanes, sometimes quite rapidly. I’m not saying outside motivation doesn’t work, it does! Using outside motivators as a springboard is fantastic! And then, you...yes I mean you, need to take it to the next step(s). YOU need to learn how to kick your own butt into action! Staying tuned into that initial outside motivation is very helpful.
In learning how to kick your own butt, you need to make sure that the direction you have chosen reflects your individual values and desires. No matter how hard I have tried in the past to accomplish certain tasks, if these tasks are not in alignment with me, it is next to impossible to trudge through to the finish line. Perhaps this is only my issue...and perhaps not.
Once you have the clarity of your chosen direction based upon your individual alignment, its much easier. This piece of the motivation puzzle is something for you to maintain on a regular basis. Check in with yourself -- do not allow mediocrity to take over. Keep your direction fresh!
Next, make sure that you haven’t gone “global” with your direction. It’s not uncommon to take our thoughts much beyond where they need to go. It is absolutely fine to think about the end result and it is equally important to bring your focus in, having your daily attention be on bite size actions. When we go out too far in our thinking, it’s easy to hit a place of overwhelm, which most often stops our train right on the tracks!
As always, be easy with this. No need to hurt yourself as you find new ways to kick your own butt!
