Coaching Corner: The seven practices of everyday leadership
By "Coach" Marilou Butcher Roth
Would you do something for me? Walk to your nearest mirror, take a look at yourself, and say “I am a leader.” Now, I realize that some, if not most of you, are not going to physically go to a mirror and do this -- that’s okay. Just imagine it. How comfortable are you with the idea of being a leader? Did you take argument with the statement because you are not serving in any type of leadership capacity?
We see leaders in many different places in our lives. Have you considered the possibility that each of us are leaders? We look to leaders to impact. Think about times when something someone did or said had a great impact on you. Or...when you said or did something that had impact on someone else. We underestimate ourselves so often, and how we may influence or inspire without even realizing it.
Today, I want to share seven practices that I feel, when in place, will define you as a leader, regardless of whether or not you are holding a leadership position.
- Make an impact
- Listen with your whole self
- Speak authentically
- Have self awareness (emotional intelligence)
- Live intentionally rather than by default
- Be open to learning
- Create balance within your life
Take some time this week and consider each of these as opportunities to grow as a person. And when you return to the mirror, see if you feel any differently. Enjoy!
