Coaching Corner: Find your music
By "Coach" Marilou Butcher Roth
As I write this, I am looking out onto the ocean from a condo in Florida -- it’s breathtaking and calming, and quite joyful to me! No kidding! It's easy to feel calm when you are on vacation and staring at the vastness of something so beautiful, isn’t it? But, what about other times? What about when I return home to laundry, dishes and life? How can those same feelings possibly be found? Well, let’s chat about that!
Last week, I was indulging in one of my guilty pleasures -- watching American Idol (no laughing), enjoying as these young people share their amazing voices, hoping to become the next idol. I’m not so sure how I feel about that part, but I do so enjoy listening to the different styles, and watching as they develop their confidence. Anyway, there was one young man, who had adopted his sister’s baby, that touched my heart. And wow, could he sing! As we sat on the couch, I found myself actually clapping, feeling so moved by his musical abilities. I literally felt my heart open, experiencing delight as I watched and listened.
I remember thinking at the time that there are many things that create this type of feeling for me -- definitely music is one of them. Not all music, mind you, I have not been able to embrace rap music at this stage of my life. And, not just music moves me in this way. When I am hanging out with grandkids and our conversations take us to new territory for them, I get incredibly excited. This is such a special time -- these conversation typically take place while they are in the car with me and where they seem to open up the most -- delightful!!
Then there are the moments of creating a really good meal for guests, along with the table amenities, which for me is like giving a gift. Now, when I need to stretch that to 30 people, its not the same! :)
These are just a few thoughts of how I generate joy in my own life. No two people are the same, and your delight may come from entirely different situations. The point is, find what those things are for you...and do them more often! Find what brings you joy, really increase the amount of joy you have in your life. You will find that even your more mundane tasks can be easier if you consciously seek joy!
This week, play with this and see how you can find your music!!
