Coaching Corner: Flight or 16 ounce?
By “Coach” Marilou Butcher Roth
As I write this, I am sitting in the Tulsa, Okla. airport, returning from presenting at the Oklahoma Association of REALTORS Leadership Academy. My flight has been delayed and I decided to stop in one of the few restaurants in this airport. As I look at the menu and have a definite “yes” to a beer, the server poses the big question to me: “Would you like a flight, or a 16 ounce?” Oh my! More choices…I had already decided on going with the local Dead Armadillo brand but I had thought my choices were over. Nope!!
It is very much like life really, isn’t it? Sometimes we think our choices are limited to a few, or one, or none, and when we open up to possibilities we find there is a vast array of choices that we were not even aware of. Or, perhaps I am in the warm glow of the flight of four Dead Armadillo’s. Either way, it makes sense to me.
When a coaching client is coming to me to decide if they should stay or go (usually a job or a relationship), what I find more often than not, is that they are not making clear choices in any area in their life. They relate to me that they typically eat the same thing for breakfast each day and give little to no thought about what they will wear for the day. They have themselves in a bit of a rut overall and the idea of actual choosing is somewhat a foreign concept to them. From that place, it is quite challenging to make the decision of “should I stay or should I go?”
This week, open yourself to your choices in whatever you do, no matter how small and see how you feel. You may even find that you branch out into bigger and bigger choices that impact your life. Practice choosing from a place of true wanting, not just settling and see what happens!
And, if you want a suggestion, choose the flight!!
