Coaching Corner: Trick or treat?
By "Coach" Marilou Butcher Roth
Halloween is right around the corner, and children of all ages don their attire to reflect the character or persona they wish to portray. Many costumes are designed to elicit fear from anyone they encounter, some scarier than others.
Let's talk about fear, shall we? Most of us would prefer not to feel that particular emotion, wishing to ignore those uncomfortable sensations that fear brings on. But, here's the thing -- when we can actually allow ourselves to feel the fear when it is happening, and breathe through it, the fear can melt. Knowing what we are actually experiencing is a skill that will bring us more into alignment with our truest self.
One of the tricks that can fool us is anger. We all know what anger feels like, and it can be brought on in various degrees by various situations at various times! Most often, underneath that seemingly justified anger, you may find other emotions hiding out. One of those is fear!
It is so much easier to go with the anger and the blame, than to acknowledge that you actually are feeling some fear.
So, this Halloween, let's begin by all deciding not to be tricked!!! Allow yourself to fully feel your fear (and any other emotions) and enjoy the treats that come!
Boo!!!
