Coaching Corner: You just never know
By "Coach" Marilou Butcher Roth
This past week has brought news that has left me feeling rattled, and uncomfortably sad.
All of you are aware of the shootings that took place in Las Vegas, a place that has always been viewed as a place of fun and merriment. “What Happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas†-- well that line certainly doesn't fit for the current situation, does it? And also, a woman with whom I worked, just lost her 14 year old daughter to cancer. This week has certainly tugged at my heartstrings, and I undoubtedly am not the only one!
My intention is not to present dire situations to read about so that you reignite your own sadness. My aim is to find the nugget from these tragedies that will bring out the goodness for each of us. Yes, I said goodness. Life happens, death happens -- every day! I seem to be hearing these words that continue to come out of my mouth: “You just never know.†I'm not sure if this is becoming more true because of my age, or my awareness. The reality is the same -- you just never know. You don't know when you wake up how the day will unfold. Usually, it goes as planned. And yet, some days will knock you on your butt!
My hope from revisiting the events of this week is to continue remembering to live each day as fully as possible. That looks different for everyone. Make sure I have made any completions that are important. Do you have anything hanging out there with loved ones that need to be resolved? Can you live your life from a place of no regrets?
Every event in our lives holds the opportunity for learning within each of us -- I know I have said this many times, and I will repeat it again. What can you learn? How will you take an event such as Las Vegas, and make positive changes in your life? When you can do that, you will find peace rather than worry about what might happen. Because...you just never know!
