Coaching Corner: Happy Cinco de Mayo!
By "Coach" Marilou Butcher Roth
So, I thought I would do a bit of investigative work and look at the history of Cinco de Mayo, figuring that it wasn't just about margaritas and tacos! What I discovered is that the date of May 5 does not represent the independence of Mexico, which is what I have assumed. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over the French forces of Napoleon III on May 5, 1862, at the Battle of Puebla. What??!!!! How this has become such a revered day in America is beyond me, but celebrate we do!
It did get me thinking however, about how we might bring more celebrations into our everyday lives. Oh sure, we do the regular birthdays and holidays, but how many of you become festive when you have a good hair day? Or perhaps you bust out the champagne when you have a closing.
This week (and further), look for reasons to celebrate the simple things in life -- appreciation brings about more things to appreciate. It just works that way. So let's take the lead from a day being celebrated for reasons unknown tomorrow and find our own reasons!
Enjoy!
