Coaching Corner: It's never too late!

How old are you? Are you 30 going on 60? Or perhaps you are 60 going on 30. We all have an age that moves up with us each year, but that number sometimes does not equate with how we feel! Recently, I got an email from one of my high school friends that I see a few times a year when a group of us get together. She was sending the email to see which of us, if any, were planning to attend our 45th (eek!) high school reunion. Once I got over the disbelief that this could even possibly be happening, I decided it would be fun to go. I attended an all girl Catholic high school and it is always great to see some of my girls -- but I digress...

In having a few conversations around this topic, I discovered that many, or more accurately, most of my friends have retired from their careers. Somehow this doesn't even equate for me, feeling personally that I could continue to do what I do endlessly. I have no judgement around this, I guess I found it more curious than anything.

So, it got me thinking about aging in general. In watching my parents age, I definitely noticed a point that they began to decline, and, it was shortly after my father retired. What happens to some when reaching a certain age? Do they give up and await their fate, relinquishing their desires and control to unforeseen forces?

Well, as much as I am enjoying my current age (62), I also feel in every part of my body that although there are changes, my vibrance is still alive and well and I plan to keep it that way! How can we embrace our chronological age and yet decide how we want to live? There seems to be a societal belief around how we behave/age/decline when we reach a certain age.

This week, regardless of the number on your driver's license, I invite you to tune into how you want to live. Are you willing to commit to optimal health and vibrance? If you get a YES to this question, decide how you wish to achieve this desired existence. Make a plan regarding your food choices, your physical exercise and your mental attitude. You are in charge...unless you would prefer to hang back and await you fate! It is never too late to decide!
