Coaching Corner: Shoo BE DO BE DO

Coaching Corner: Shoo BE DO BE DO

No, this is not part of lyrics to a Frank Sinatra song! What I want to talk about today are two words/concepts -- BEING and DOING. First, let me break down what I mean by each word. When we are talking about “doing,” the connection is easy -- it is what we “do.” Any activity or action falls into this category. When we look at “being,” it becomes a little tricker. For me the concept of being is when I place my attention inwards rather than outside of myself. For each of us to optimally function within our lives, there needs to be a balance of “being” and “doing.”

Typically, the doing piece is what comes naturally to most of us -- we are a “doing” society. The messages that are out there around this idea tell us that doing more reflects your ability, your strength, or perhaps your tenacity. There is praise for hard workers, without sometimes taking into account that the hard worker has totally disconnected from him/herself.

There are countless ways to connect in (Be). You might choose meditation, deep breathing, journaling, or reading something inspirational. Practicing yoga can also bring you more “in.” These are ideas that will undoubtedly bring benefit to your well being. However, right now I am putting the attention on a simpler way of being. When you can be totally present with whatever is happening, I feel you bring “being” into your “doing.”

For example, rather than just preparing your breakfast by tossing cereal into a bowl, first tune in to what your body might desire the most. What sounds good? Then, allow your attention to be on the preparation, the task at hand, as opposed to thinking about 25 other “doings” that need to happen. Give yourself permission to focus on only what you are doing at that moment and time.

Being able to bring your full attention to any task will assist your whole body and well-being. Another big plus is how your loved ones and clients will feel valued by your attention! So, in thinking about this, perhaps Frank Sinatra was more tuned in than I thought!!!
