Coaching Corner: Awareness about self-awareness
By "Coach" Marilou Butcher Roth
There are times when I have noticed that people are not especially keen on the idea or practice of being self-aware. To me, this is a mandatory part of how to live your life most fully and joyfully, however, not everyone necessarily wants to partake! Self-awareness means you have to pay attention to how you feel, what you want, and take 100 percent responsibility for your life, and that just doesn't appeal to everyone.
So today, I want to talk about a different perspective which perhaps might be a bit more palatable. What if you forget the “self-awareness†phrase and instead bring in the idea of collaborating with yourself! Think about it -- we are all about collaboration in many aspects of our lives. Look at all of the opportunities we have to come together with one or more people to accomplish a common goal. In those instances, you work with others through discussion, decisions and action. So, why not do the same thing with ourselves?
When we have a desired direction or intention, what type of discussion might we have with ourselves? Perhaps, you journal about what moving forward with this might mean, and also bring into the mix how you feel when you imagine this occurring. Is this direction a “yes†or a “no†for you? Is it something that you feel you “should†do, or is it a true “want?" What action needs to be taken, if any? Do you need participation from others for this, or just yourself?
See...it works, doesn't it?
Collaboration with yourself will bring more clarity and ease to your choices and accomplishments, and, trust me, you will become more self-aware in the process!
