Coaching Corner: SOS
By "Coach" Marilou Butcher Roth
There are times in each of our lives when the load becomes heavy -- this may be physical, emotional or both. How do you handle those times? Do you freeze and halt all activity? Do you go numb? Do you get irritable, especially with those closest to you? Or do you ask for help to navigate those muddy waters?
There are some who have old beliefs that say its not OK to ask for help. Old beliefs can whip our butts! It is more than OK to ask for help -- you do not need to do it all alone. There are other stories that we may tell ourselves that our significant others should just know when we need help and jump in. Well, in my experience, that rarely happens. The danger of that particular story is that while we are certain that the other person knows we need help, they are blissfully enjoying their day, without the slightest inkling that we may be internally drowning!
We need to learn to speak! We need to be asking for what we need! Asking to have help IS NOT a sign of weakness -- in fact, its the opposite! It takes strength to go inside and realize assistance is needed -- and then to make that request!!!
This week, pay attention to when you find yourself in a position of feeling like you want or need help, and what happens for you. Then, take a chance -- ask for help! And then...relax!!
