Coaching Corner: What are you looking at????
By "Coach" Marilou Butcher Roth
Today I am giving you homework -- yes, that's right, homework! Starting from the time you read this blog and going from there, I want you to consciously seek out things that create a good feeling space for you. To give you a sense of this, I will use this example. As I type this, it is Thursday afternoon and looking out my window, the sky is gray and the wind is fiercely blowing. Just going with that observation, I feel slightly down and unmotivated. So, no, that won't work!
Looking around my office (on purpose) I notice my dog Zoe, chewing on her bone. I smile as I watch her working intently on getting the best of her current treasure. Ah, now I feel better than I did looking out of my window. Let's do more...I notice a bright blue magnet on my desk lamp that reads “YAY! LIFE!†Not only does the magnet itself bring me happiness, but the memory of a friend giving it to me after one of our coaching trainings in Boulder puts an icing of joy on this cake! I trust by now you are getting the picture of how to consciously choose what you are focusing on.
Think about how easy it is to put our attention on what is happening that we don't like. For example, looking out of my window could become my primary focus. I could point it out to my husband, engaging his attention as well and then both of us could lament on how, again, we do not like Ohio winters! That scenario would not serve either of us very well -- nor would it give me the momentum I seek in completing my work tasks for the day.
Also, you can seek out events, future or past that when thinking of them you feel joy. Whenever I reach a point of what feels totally crummy, a sure feel good bet is to think about one of our grandchildren -- works every time!
I am not telling you that reality does not exist -- I am merely pointing out that you can feel better if you seek things out that allow you to feel that way! Just give it a try -- and you may even find this to be the most fun you have ever had with homework! Enjoy!!!
