Honestly, I cannot imagine anyone not answering this question with anything other than a resounding “YES!" Ultimately, every action we take has the underlying intention that it will create something good for us. Most of us do not desire to intentionally take actions that generate bad feelings.
So, how do we get ourselves to the place where we feel as vibrant and alive as possible, welcoming each day with optimism and joy? Let’s look at this quest a bit closer...
- Start your day with a positive attitude. How are you beginning your day? Do you jump out of bed and hit the floor running? Or do you slowly awaken and begin your day with ease? Acknowledge your routine without any sense of self-deprecation. How you begin your day will impact how the remainder of your day will unfold. If you begin frenetically, the chances of slowing down are pretty slim. If you begin from a place of peace, that peace has the potential to follow you throughout your day.
- Look for things that make you happy. Okay, I realize this sounds somewhat on the silly side, and yet we tend to place our attention on the things that do not make us happy, as in, "look what’s happening to me.” Seek out everything you can that brings you to a more joyful place.
- Move your body! This is so important, especially as we age. Finding ways to move our bodies for flexibility, health, and strength generates physical and mental well-being. And it doesn’t have to look any specific way. Find ways that please YOU. Stretching can be easily done when you awaken and throughout the day. You may be drawn to dancing or weight training. Find something you enjoy—do not let your body become sedentary. Move it or lose it!!
- Feed yourself well. Oh my goodness, there are a plethora of ways to eat: Keto, Paleo, plant-based, and on and on. No one knows your body better than you. What works for one person may be the opposite of what is in alignment with your body. Eat the foods that allow your body to be at its best. Eat mindfully; do not rush through your meals. Sit your butt down and enjoy your food, and don’t eat until you are stuffed. Pay attention to when your body has enough food and honor that feeling. Listening to your body's cues is one of the most beautiful ways to feel your best.
- Continue to learn. There is always something for us to learn about our careers, our lives, and ourselves. When we stop learning, we stop growing. Bring new information and new ideas into your life on a regular basis. Not only does this protect and enhance your cognitive abilities, it also keeps life interesting!
