Ohio REALTORS Recognize National Fair Housing Month

Apr 2, 2025

April is National Fair Housing Month, a time to recognize the ongoing fight against housing discrimination and to honor the passing of the Fair Housing Act. Fair housing ensures that all individuals have equal opportunities in the housing market, regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, or disability.

Enacted in 1968, the Fair Housing Act is a landmark piece of legislation that protects these rights. Every April, REALTORS® observe Fair Housing Month to reaffirm their commitment to providing fair, equitable, and professional service to all individuals searching for real estate.

Strong fair housing laws and practices are essential for thriving communities and a stable economy. Discrimination distorts the housing market and denies qualified buyers access to homeownership. The National Association of REALTORS® supports fair housing through policy advocacy, innovative programs, and legal guidance to uphold these critical protections.

Fair housing protections begin with the federal Fair Housing Act and extend through state and local regulations. In 1965, Ohio passed legislation ensuring that individuals in protected classes have the right to live wherever they can afford to buy or rent. The Ohio Civil Rights Commission enforces these laws, including Ohio’s adaptation of the Fair Housing Act.

You can take part in National Fair Housing Month by advocating for accountability, promoting culture change, and supporting fair housing education. By taking action today, you contribute to a more inclusive and equitable future.
