Coaching Corner: There’s No Place Like Home!
By Master Coach Marilou Butcher Roth
Remember this line? Imagine a young Judy Garland, portraying Dorothy Gale, the main character in The Wizard of Oz, clicking those ruby slippers together, repeating over and over, “there’s no place like home.” Hopefully, you bring this image to mind without those wretched little monkeys coming in!
Years ago, I frequented parts of California when I was participating in a coaching apprentice program—Santa Barbara, Ojai, Ventura. I would so look forward to these trips, enjoying a part of our beautiful country that, up until then, had not been part of my life experience.
One moment has come to mind more than once for me. I was in Santa Barbara, enjoying my daily walk on the beach. Soaking in this wonderful moment, I came across this adorable little building on the beach where you could buy ice cream. I remember thinking at the time how I wished we had something like this at home, here in Cincinnati. This was a very temporary thought, as I quickly realized that although we are not near an ocean, we do, in fact, have many wonderful places to enjoy ice cream and more.
This was one of those Aha! moments, realizing that I was not seeking out and enjoying all of the wonderful places that were easily accessible to me. One that came to mind was an outdoor cafe within walking distance of our house that we rarely went to. This was such a great reminder that I did not need to look far to find amazing experiences. (Please do not think, however, that I do not enjoy travel and all it has to offer.) This new thought simply brought me into a place of being present and appreciative of what I have right here!
Now, if you are feeling adventurous, you can even take this deeper, realizing that we have all we need inside of each of us. Looking “out there” can be fun, as long as you stay with the idea that there is indeed, no place like home!
