Coaching Corner: The Seven Practices of Everyday Leadership
By Master Coach Marilou Butcher Roth
Would you do something for me? Walk to your nearest mirror, take a look at yourself, and say out loud “I am a leader.” Now, I realize that some, if not most of you, are not going to physically go to a mirror and do this, and that’s okay, you can imagine this activity if you are not comfortable with the mirror idea. Either way, notice your experience. What happens for you as you identify yourself as a leader? Did you find your inner self arguing with the idea of being a leader because you are currently not serving in any type of leadership position?
Leaders present in many different areas of our lives. Have you considered the possibility that each of us are leaders? Leaders impact. Think about times when something someone did or said made an impact on you. Or…when you said or did something that had an impact on someone else. We underestimate ourselves so often, and how we influence or inspire others without even realizing it.
Today, I want to share seven practices that I feel, when in place, will define you as a leader:
- Make an impact
- Listen with your whole self
- Speak authentically
- Have self awareness (emotional intelligence)
- Live intentionally rather than by default
- Be open to learning
- Create balance within your life
Take some time and consider each of these as opportunities to grow as a person, and when you return to the mirror, you may well have a different experience!
