Ohio’s election results are in and their implications at the local, state, and federal levels will shape the future of America’s political system for years to come. Ohio was once again in the national spotlight for its high-profile races, which reflected the national shift in political dynamics as election night unfolded.
Below is a breakdown of key outcomes and what they mean for Ohio REALTORS® and the broader real estate community. Please note that these results are unofficial until the Secretary of State certifies the results of the election.
Presidential, Senate, and Congressional Outcomes
In the presidential race, former President Donald Trump and his running mate, Ohio Senator J.D. Vance, defeated Democrat Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the race for U.S. President, securing a decisive win in Ohio with over 55% of the vote. This victory bolstered down-ticket Republican candidates, most notably in the high-stakes U.S. Senate race. Republican challenger Bernie Moreno unseated long-time Senator Sherrod Brown, winning by nearly 4%. This victory contributed to a larger trend nationwide, as Republicans gained enough seats to secure a majority in the U.S. Senate.
In Ohio’s Congressional races, all 15 seats were contested, with Republicans maintaining control of 10. The closest race unfolded in Northwest Ohio, where long-serving Democratic Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur faced a strong challenge from Republican State Representative Derek Merrin.
Ohio Supreme Court Shifts
Three seats on the Ohio Supreme Court were on the ballot, and Republicans Megan Shanahan, Dan Hawkins, and Joe Deters swept them all. This outcome, with Republicans now holding a 6-1 majority on the court, is a significant setback for Democrats who were hoping to shift the court in their favor.
Defeat of State Issue 1
State Issue 1 aimed to change Ohio's redistricting process by creating a 15-person "Ohio Citizens Redistricting Commission" appointed by retired judges from across the political spectrum. While supporters of Issue 1 argued that it could have ended gerrymandering, the measure was defeated, with nearly 54% of voters opposing it, mainly due to concerns over accountability. Opponents argued that the proposal would hand redistricting power to unelected officials who lack direct responsibility to Ohio voters. With the amendment’s defeat, the current redistricting process will remain in place.
Changes in the State Legislature
In the Ohio Statehouse, Republicans maintained strong majorities in both the House and Senate, though Democrats managed to gain two seats in each chamber. This brings the power dynamics to a 65-34 majority in the House and a 24-9 majority in the Senate. With over 20 newly elected legislators, Ohio REALTORS® have made it a priority to build a relationship with them and educate them on our issues.
Looking Ahead
With these election results, Ohio REALTORS® will continue to advocate for policies that support property rights, housing affordability, and a healthy real estate market. Building relationships with newly elected officials will be a priority as we head into 2025, ensuring that REALTOR® interests remain central in Ohio’s housing market.
