#CoachingCorner: The Envy Trap
By Master Coach Marilou Butcher Roth
- Envy comes from people’s ignorance of, or lack of belief in, their own gifts.”―Jean Vanier
This quote passed across my consciousness today, and it struck me as one of those opinions that we don’t often think about. What really happens when we find ourselves in a place of envy or jealousy about someone else? We diminish ourselves with each thought about how that other person is somehow better, smarter, more successful, etc.!
There will always be someone who seems to possess what we wish we had. Can you admire them without feelings of invalidation for yourself? Here is an interesting thought….. others are looking at you, wishing they had the _________ that you have.
This week, please notice when you find yourself feeling envious, and, without judging yourself, find at least one quality about yourself that you can appreciate. This can be a challenging practice, and, with some intention and attention, you can move yourself into a space where it becomes natural. When this happens, your previous green-eyed monster will only notice, without the discomfort of envy!
