#CoachingCorner: PUT DOWN THAT BAG OF CHIPS!
By Master Coach Marilou Butcher Roth
Over many years of coaching, I have noticed recurring themes amongst my clients and, sometimes, myself. One of the more prevalent themes is around how we spend our time. Personally, I strive to spend my time purposefully (although that does not always come to pass) and I might find myself unnecessarily in front of the television with nothing specific that I even want to watch!
I am not passing judgment on myself or any of you for spending your time unconsciously; noticing this pattern is extremely helpful in getting yourself back to a good feeling space. Using the above example, I do not realize I am checking out until much after it occurs.
Where am I going with this today? I am looking more closely at how we all may be feeding into the malaise that can occur, often catching us by surprise and happening by us not paying attention as to how we are spending our precious time. Instead of tuning out, we need to bring our awareness into what activities promote our joy and fulfillment.
It can be easy to go into default mode - it may be television, or perhaps food is your go-to. Today, take stock of where you are right now, and throughout the day pause and ask yourself if you are spending your time in alignment with your goals, desires, and values. This isn’t hard - it merely requires your attention. Sometimes it’s as simple as turning off that TV and putting down that bag of chips!!
