#CoachingCorner: Slooooooow Down!
By Master Coach Marilou Butcher Roth
Think back to 2020, as we began to slowly reintegrate into the next phase of our lives as things began to ease up a bit. If you can, remember your individual pace at that time. Most people that I know found that as things slowed down, they too found themselves moving at a slower pace than prior to COViD overtaking our lives.
Personally, I experienced myself moving more purposefully, not feeling the familiar need to rush through my daily activities. This was truly one of the gifts that COVID delivered, at least to me. I became considerably more conscious of how quickly, or slowly I move. It became clear to me that my desire is to enjoy the pace at which I move, easily identifying those items that require my attention and not rushing to accomplish what remains on my to-do list.
So, there’s my bit, what about you? Find your own sweet spot! Each of us has an individual essence pace, the pace that is most comfortable and most efficient. Here is a little exercise that can assist you in finding your essence pace. Find a hallway that has a bit of length to it; now, walk super fast (if your hallway is on the shorter side, go back again), and notice how you feel. Now do the same thing, except this time, walk very slow. For most people, this super slow pace will probably feel very uncomfortable. Lastly, move again, this time at a pace that FEELS GOOD. This is your essence pace. Moving at this pace throughout your day will bring you not only to a great-feeling place, it also creates substantially more productivity.
For years, I would find myself rushing through my day, which I mainly attribute to the fact that I had two sets of twins, two years apart, and honestly, in my mind, rushing was my only option. Obviously, I can’t rewind my life, and yet I can’t help but wonder how different my days would have been with the discovery of the pace that is individually mine.
Enjoy this exercise and all its benefits!
