Ohio REALTORS President Ralph Mantica joined Daphne Hawk, Superintendent of the Ohio Division of Real Estate, for an episode of “Protecting What Matters,” a podcast produced by the Ohio Department of Commerce. The podcast is a resource for businesses, families and individuals wanting to protect what matters most.
Since 2003, the National Association of REALTORS has designated September as REALTOR Safety Month, where extra emphasis is put on keeping REALTORS and consumers safe when it comes to real estate transactions.
Daphne Hawk, superintendent from Commerce’s real estate and professional licensing division, and Ralph Mantica, president of Ohio Realtors, discussed on the podcast how and why safety plays a significant role in real estate work right now and year-round.
“We try to make it known to our agents that it may not always be a friendly face that you encounter. It’s important that agents follow safety steps beforehand to help prevent any possible risks,” says Mantica.
Hawk and Mantica site looking into individuals before meeting, being aware of your surroundings, following your gut feeling, and listening to your instincts as ways to avoid potential threats.
“Unfortunately, real estate agents are entrepreneurs, and we’re always eager to meet new people. We don’t always take the time to vet them properly. You must listen to your gut and know that it’s okay to take a step back if you’re feeling uncomfortable."
Mantica also shares information on how REALTORS can learn more about safety tips specifically designed for REALTORS.
“The association has great resources available on our website that help agents stay as safe as they can.”
The Department of Commerce is the state’s chief regulatory agency specifically focusing on consumer protection. It also houses the Division of Real Estate, which oversees all real estate licensees in the state.
