Coaching Corner: Are we having fun yet?
By Marilou Butcher Roth, Master Coach
Don’t you just love the word fun? And the idea that having fun is meant to be part of your life? We can often get ourselves into such a place of “busyness” that fun completely drops out of the equation. There is also a belief out there that as productive adults in society, we must keep our nose to the grindstone (whatever that means) and get our work done -- no time for fun (whatever that means). Sorry…I am not buying any of that.
Life is meant to be joyful, although at times, that joy seems to elude us, doesn’t it? So, how do we chase down this elusive thing we call fun (or joy, or delight, or whatever word works for you)? Sometimes it seems as if accessing even the smallest amount of joy is impossible to achieve.
Let’s start with your mindset -- do you find yourself finding more and more to complain about? This doesn’t mean that you are finding recipients to hear your tail(s) of woe; it might all be happening within your mind. Either way, this is a choice point for each of us. What if you began your day with the intention of FINDING things that make you happy. Small things, big things, within our home, within ourselves -- anywhere you can!! How might that differ from only seeing things that do not make you happy? We need to retrain our brains!
Next, look at the choices, commitments and agreements that you are making. Do they align with what you want and who you are? Oftentimes, exploring this is a great place to uncover your missing fun. Know what is a “yes” and what is a “no,” and respond accordingly. Please do not be afraid to say no if it is truly a no.
I would love to see each of us looking at these two action steps, to remind and allow us to honor that fun is for each and every one of us. Can you find yours?
