Coaching Corner: Think small!
By Marilou Butcher Roth, Master Coach
Do you find yourself in situations where you feel overwhelmed, unsure of your next step(s)? It is a safe assumption that the majority of us have had this experience at some point. Don’t laugh when I tell you this…we often think too big! I know we are told to think bigger, to take ourselves to the next level of success, and I am not disputing that perspective. We do want to expand beyond where we are, and this is a good thing.
What about those times, however, when we are facing challenges? Perhaps when you look at your desk, you fail to see the surface due to the piles of papers, all crying out for your loving attention? These are the times when I want you to begin to think small. We typically look at the entire situation (or mess) that needs our attention. Don’t do it! Back off and before you think twice, grab a notebook and begin the critical task of breaking these items down into lovely bite-size pieces.
As you gently identify the small bites, notice how your body feels. Is your tension easing? Are you feeling more relaxed and less tight? This identification process is quite important to moving through these challenging situations. Finding the smaller pieces of each will keep you from the potential risk of distracting yourself from success.
Today, find those places where thinking small, taking smaller actions, and solving small problems can lead you to BIG success!
