Coaching Corner: What scares you?
By Marilou Butcher Roth, Master Coach
During the course of each of our lives, we will be presented with opportunities that may cause us to take pause. Typically, when they come up, we are pushed firmly right out of our comfort zone. When you have the option to act upon something that feels very uncomfortable, you get to decide which direction to move.
This can be one of those big moments in life, to which you could say “yes”, or possibly “no.” This may be time for some self reflection -- how will you feel if you move forward, or if you don’t.
Years ago, my husband and step-son came back from a meeting with Clear Channel, proudly announcing that I was going to do a radio show. My first reaction was to voice, rather boisterously as I recall, that there was no way, absolutely no way that I was going to do this. I did, however, take some time to explore this potential activity, and relatively quickly realized that saying no felt worse than saying yes. For six months, I had a weekly radio show, and I can honestly say it was fun.
Walking away from something just because it scared me felt like a complete cop out. And, if I actually did this to my fullest, how would I feel, finding myself feeling proud of this new, albeit, challenging accomplishment. When the six month agreement was over, I felt complete, and yes...proud of what I had done.
Where might you be holding back because you feel uncomfortable? You can become your own best coach, talking yourself off of the ledge to make your best decision.
