Coaching Corner: Are you committed to mediocrity?
By Marilou Butcher Roth, Master Coach
Often in my training courses, I speak to the concept of “unconscious commitments.” Unconscious Commitments are what we create by default based on our conditioning or beliefs brought forward from our childhood. This type of thinking has been considered taboo in the business world, but guess what, times are changing, and I am inviting you to open your mind and read on…
How do you see yourself? Are you finding yourself as successful and thriving, or as barely surviving? Do you find yourself resenting others for their success, feeling as if the world is somehow out to get you?
I have found over the years that many of my coaching clients begin their coaching adventure with negative or limiting beliefs about themselves or their abilities. We bring so much from our childhood to our present day, and sometimes do not realize the impact these past beliefs can have on us. Therefore, I continue to stress the importance of attitude and awareness, keeping yourself in the best mental place possible.
Within each of us is the ability to reach new and exciting levels -- do you find yourself moving forward, or have you become complacent in your progress? Are you going through the motions, doing what you think you need to do to earn a living, or are you passionate about what you are contributing to the world?
It is not uncommon to fall into a pattern or a rut -- most of us have experienced this at some point or another. I refer to this state as being committed to mediocrity. The good news is, this situation can be changed easily by shifting how you perceive yourself and your life.
Here is your jump-off point. Which direction do you want to go? You can continue to read on to find a new and exciting approach, or you can stop reading and stay where you are.
If you are still reading, I appreciate your willingness to learn about yourself and become the best you can be. Start today, this minute, and decide how you want your career and your life to be. The following suggestions will get you started:
- One of the strongest tools I have found over the years is to write down what you want your life to look like -- not just identify your goals, but to create a script of sorts that describes in detail what you want to happen. The key here is to get specific, keeping your desires in the present tense, as if it has already occurred. You will know you are on the right track when you can feel excitement as you write.
- Uncover your genius qualities. Are you a genius at communicating? Or possibly with details? We each have our unique individual areas where our genius lives; the key is to get yourself clear as to your own. Keep in mind, you might discover genius qualities in bits of what you do, perhaps not the entire activity. Once you become more tuned into your qualities, you will discover more opportunities to bring them into your everyday life.
These are just two ways to lead you to a more fulfilling career and life. When you allow yourself some time, you will find even more paths to follow, bringing you to a place where you are living your best life!
