Coaching Corner: I do!
By Marilou Butcher Roth, Master Coach
This evening I have the honor of officiating my niece’s wedding, and it has consequently generated thoughts about commitments, and how important they are in our lives. Some of the commitments we make are obvious, as are the beautiful wedding vows that will happen this evening. And, there are countless commitments that are made unconsciously, playing out in ways that may not be in our best interest.
This next piece may not be very pleasing to read as it puts you in a position of having to take responsibility for what is happening in your life. Here goes...look at any specific situation in your life. Perhaps you do not have the abundance of dollars you long for in your bank account. Now...take a deep breath and repeat this statement, “I am committed to not having the money that I want.” What??!! I know, I can hear you from here, telling me that I have lost my mind because clearly that is not what you are committed to. I know, I know. For years I felt exactly the same way. Here is the cool part. When you can look displeasing situations right smack in the eye, you get all the information you need. Your reality is what you are committed to!
Now, you can make a new commitment by repeating this statement “I commit to an abundance of money.” Ah, yes! This may be oversimplifying, and yet the power of this exercise is huge. Here is a real life example. Years ago, my assistant was consistently showing up late and always had a myriad of rationale to support her delay. One day I had her say “I commit to being late.” She went along with this, being used to me by then, and as soon as she said it, she went silent. She got it! And, she was never late again.
Commitments do not always work quite so easily. You may need to re-commit several times before things gel. That’s perfectly okay. This is your path!
I am going to stop here, as this might be just a bit more than you bargained for today. And, also because I have a wedding to go to!!
I do!!
