Coaching Corner: Finding new ways!
By Marilou Butcher Roth, Master Coach
Recently, I facilitated a workshop with material that I had successfully created and presented several times before. Although the material appeared relevant, I noticed that internally, I did not feel the same sense of excitement in presenting it. Hmmm, what’s the deal? This has always been so fun for me in the past. My mind went dark -- was I not meant to do this work going forward? What??? Shortly after I talked myself off the proverbial ledge, I realized that it was a relatively simple answer -- I needed to revamp my material, change things up, create something new!! Ah, yes, that definitely feels better!
This experience got me thinking (I know that’s not a surprise), realizing that there were other aspects of my life where I was having the same experience, albeit not bringing the same punch as my workshop example. Perhaps you may be finding yourself in the same boat?
Taking this universal nudge, I launched into looking at where else I might create new ways of doing “old” activities. First up was our bed -- for some time I had made our bed each morning in a certain way, utilizing a duvet cover with matching pillow shams -- beautiful! Or not! As I revisited this daily task, I realized that truly I was bored with looking at the same old combination every day! How might I do this differently? Could I find a new, more pleasing way to make my bed? Aha! With little to no effort, I created a new look that is not only easier to accomplish, it is far more interesting and pleasing to look at. If anyone is curious, I took off the duvet cover and folded it several times, placing it at the bottom of the bed, exposing the comforter. Oh yeah! Easy to do and yet a huge change!
Where might you want to change things up? This might be within your business, or within your personal life. Look around you. Where are you just “going through the motions?” What activities persist because “that’s the way I’ve always done it?”
If you begin to let yourself get curious, you will undoubtedly find countless items up for revamping. Who knows what you may find...Enjoy!
