Coaching Corner: What are you thinking?
By Marilou Butcher Roth, Master Coach
There have been several conversations of late around resistance, and how we all can find ourselves in this place from time to time, resisting what we are seeing and experiencing. There is nothing earth-shattering here, we all do it, the key is to be aware when this is happening. When we are pushing against something, it gets bigger.
For example, you may have someone in your life that is just not behaving the way you think they should. Come on, you know this has happened, or possibly it is happening in present time. So, these people just don’t or won’t do what you think they need to be doing. You lock yourself into a position -- your position, feeling without any shred of a doubt that you are right and they are wrong! Aha! Can you feel the resistance in your body, even just reading the words?
When you put yourself into this uncomfortable place of pushing against this person and situation, you will find that you notice even more of this behavior, from your object of attention, or even from others. You will begin to see it show up all around you, friends that are having the same issue, or perhaps something you are reading. I cannot give you a logical explanation of how this works, I can merely tell you that this is how resistance affects us, and not in a positive way.
Bottom line...whatever you focus your attention on gets bigger -- good or bad. Think about when you are car shopping and you have your eye on one particular choice. Don’t you begin to see those cars everywhere? It’s basically the same principle.
The big question is where do you want to place your attention?
