Coaching Corner: Following your 'yes'

Coaching Corner: Following your 'yes'

In my own life, I have found that the more I tune in to myself and what I truly want ("yes"), the easier my life becomes. For years I think I found many things in my life to be out of my control, feeling as if I had no choice in what happened. I lived from a place of pleasing others and made my decisions from what I thought I “should” do rather than what I wanted to do. In fact, I don't think I even knew what I truly wanted. So, I would like to give you an easy exercise to tune in, using your body to discover your yes and your no.

First, bring something to mind that without a doubt is an absolute NO for you. It might be smoking or eating something you find totally disgusting. It doesn't matter what it is, but it needs to be something that you absolutely would not do, or do not want in your life. OK...got it? Once you bring that to your mind, notice what happens in your body — is your body tense, did your stomach get queasy? Try not to judge what is happening, just notice.

Now, think of something (or someone) that is an absolute YES. This might be an event, a child or grandchild, a food. Again, it does not matter, as long as it is something that you can totally say YES to. OK, again bring your attention to your body and just notice. Do you experience your heart feeling more open, or perhaps your shoulders relaxed?

These are clues that can help you when you are trying to decide if an action, etc. is a YES for you or a NO. Pay attention — gentle attention to how your body responds to the thought and you will have a good indication of your best direction.

This takes practice so don't give up if you don't have the “right” experience, just try again. You will get the hang of this and find that it is fun — and you know how I feel about fun!
