Coaching Corner: Love in the air! Are you breathing it in?

Feb 15, 2019

Yesterday we celebrated Valentines Day, a day focused on love. The history of this widely celebrated day brings forth stories that seemingly have nothing to do with our current practices around Valentines Day, with an interesting tale of the murder of St. Valentine. In doing some research on this, I found myself quickly feeling somewhat let down by what I was reading, so I chose to curtail that activity and focus on flowers and candy instead! So, bottom line, I did not reach the point of connecting the dots between murder and chocolate hearts! Sorry, you will need to do your own research for that one.

Here is what I do know -- people for years have considered this to be a day of love. Even the smallest of children will spend their time crafting hearts carefully from red construction paper to bestow their heartfelt gift on a parent, friend or classmate. I remember even with my sons, having those boxes of little valentines, each carefully selected for their valentines of choice in any given year.

Clearly, the world rises to the occasion of love on Feb. 14, which is great fun! What about the other 364 days of the year? Are we expressing ourselves in the same way? Now I get it -- some of the ways in which people choose to celebrate will not be duplicated on a daily basis. What about the essence of the day?

Are you finding ways to appreciate those you love? Or, once the clock chimes and Feb. 15 has arrived, do you slink back into old patterns of just going through the motions of the day? This year, I invite you -- yes you -- to look at the loved ones around you and find aspects that you can verbally appreciate. Don’t wait another year for Hallmark to declare it is now the day to show your love and affection for that special someone!

Enjoy!
