Coaching Corner: Are you sleepy???
By "Coach" Marilou Butcher Roth
Similar to some of you, I have recently attended the Ohio Association of REALTORS Spring Legislative Conference. After a full day on Monday, I was anxiously awaiting the moment when my head would rest in peaceful slumber on my pillow! As I crawled into my bed, I noticed a blue card propped on the opposite pillow. On it were eight tips from Arianna Huffington for a better sleep. OK -- I was intrigued, and managed to stay awake long enough to read through each of them.
Sleep is crucial to how we navigate through our day and yet, countless people will stay up well past a suggested bedtime to attempt to generate more hours of their given 24 hours! And, others will go to bed at a reasonable time but their minds will continue to race, and sleep becomes impossible. So...without further ado, here are the eight tips:
- Set a cool room temperature.
- No electronic devices starting 30 minutes before bedtime.
- No caffeine after 2 p.m.
- Pajamas, nightdresses (?) and even special t-shirts send a sleep-friendly message to your body. If you wear it to the gym, don't wear it to bed.
- Do some light stretching, deep breathing, yoga or meditation to help your body and your mind transition to sleep.
- When reading a book, make it a physical book or an e-reader that does not emit blue light.
- Ease yourself into sleep mode by drinking some caffeine-free tea. (I like Sleepy Time)
- Before you turn off the lights, write a list of what you are grateful for.
Below is information from The Better Sleep Council -- (yes it exists):
Sleep.
It refreshes us like nothing else. It can be occasionally elusive, almost always comforting, and definitely essential to our survival. And although we spend 33 percent of our lives asleep, we barely give it a moment's notice....until we can't sleep. Then we think about it to the point of obsession.
For millions of people, the consequences of a poor night's sleep -- higher stress, increased mistakes, difficulty concentrating -- are every day occurrences. But it doesn't have to be this way.
Happy sleeping!!!
