Coaching Corner: The power of clearing

By “Coach” Marilou Butcher Roth

REALTORS help people move every day, and each move requires the person moving to examine what they have to move and determine if it will be packed to go with them, or sent off in another direction. But, what about those of us who are not moving? What about the years of bringing items into our homes? Most of us do not send off as much as we are bringing in, and consequently, our homes can become full of all of our prized possessions!

Now, this may not resonate with you at all. You may be one of those people who are constantly paying attention to how much “stuff” you have, and are taking steps to keep up with it. I, however, am not one of those people. Oh, my house is clean and tidy…but don’t go to the basement!!!! Hmm, or actually, the garage as well. These are my two spots where tidiness seems to go out the window!

Clearing your space is a very powerful action. When you live in a home that is not filled with clutter, it allows you to feel freer. Check it out — imagine if all of the clutter in your home, office or car were eliminated. How do you feel? Better, eh?

So, here’s the gig — clearing away your clutter most probably is not something that will occur overnight. It requires a process, just as many other parts of our lives do. What I am finding is that it is much more about consistency than about planning a day or weekend to accomplish this sometimes daunting task.

It is more about doing something small toward your goal each day. Really! It’s working! Before I tackled the big stuff I decided to start in one of my closets first. Each morning, I have spent about 5-10 minutes on removing what is no longer relevant in our lives. It is amazing to see some of the items that I have had for a very, very long time. It’s important to choose a specific place and work there until its done. You don’t want to be jumping around to different locations. Although you may see some progress, your level of satisfaction will not come close to finishing one closet, or one drawer or shelf.

This week I challenge any of you that have more “stuff” than you would like to have, to begin your own clearing process…a little at a time. You might be surprised at how easy this clearing is!
