Coaching Corner: Go on…try it!

By “Coach” Marilou Butcher Roth

Its a new year! Will this year be like last year, and the year before? It is so easy to just fall into patterns of how we have always done things. Have you had thoughts of activities you want to participate in? Or a trip you have wanted to take? Maybe you have always wanted to take an art or dance class. I’m not talking about new years intentions necessarily, I am talking about that thing or things that have been put on the back burner for one reason or another. Or, it might actually be something you haven’t ever considered. This might also be a family activity.

Take a moment right now — take a deep breath. Ask yourself “what would I like to try/do this year?” You may get an immediate response, or perhaps not — do not worry. This is a question that you can continue to ask. You may find that something shows up for you — it might be something someone says, or maybe you see something on TV that peaks your interest.

Be bold! Live your life from your fullest place! Try something new! Have fun!

Coaching Corner: Make your plan!

By “Coach” Marilou Butcher Roth

How many of you made new year’s resolutions last year? How did it go for you? Were you able to meet the intentions you set? And, how many of you made resolutions for this new year? Are they the same as last year?

Here’s the thing…many people take time each year to determine how they want to make changes in their lives, with the hope of getting themselves to a better place. Often, these resolutions, so carefully made, fall short early on, only to bring about self judgement and frustration. What happens? Why aren’t we always able to accomplish what we set out to do?

A lot of it comes from not having clarity around why we want what we want. If your intention for the year is based upon something you feel you “should” do, there is a high probability that it will not come to fruition.

Let’s start fresh. Look at the different areas of your life — for example, health, wealth, career, family, friends and please do not forget to include YOU as one of the categories. Please add any others that come to you.

Once you have the areas, identify what you want in that area. Then ask yourself why you want that specific thing. What is important about it? How would your life be different if you had it? How do you feel when you think about having it?

If you still feel good (and hopefully excited) about the accomplishment of this item, begin to make your plan. What action steps will you take to reach your desired destination? Be as specific as you can and make sure you have your “whens” plugged in as well.

You may want to buddy up with someone to keep you accountable, or perhaps you find that just having your plan and referring back to why this is important to you, will keep you motivated and moving where YOU want to go!

Enjoy!

Coaching Corner: So you want a Happy New Year?

By “Coach” Marilou Butcher Roth

How many of you start the new year with a list of resolutions, carefully designed to bring something into your life that currently you feel you are lacking? Potentially, more of something. This year let’s try something different — let’s focus your attention on items that bring more LIFE into your life! Let me get more clear on this.

Recently, during a vacation, I spotted a book called “Do More of What Makes You Feel Alive,” by Kobe Yamada. Of course, true to my nature, I picked it up and was delighted with what I saw and now have a few copies sitting on my desk. Its not a big book and each page has very few words, but the few words are very meaningful. It is filled with quotes designed to inspire a bigger life. Here are a few of my favorites:

  • Imagine More…why not have a big life? (unknown)
  • Shine More…every sunrise is an invitation for us to arise and brighten someone’s day. (Richelle E. Goodrich)
  • Get More Involved…do something wonderful, people may imitate it. (Albert Schweitzer)
  • Care More…a life spent loving…is a life well spent. (Suzanne Clothier)
  • More Courage…everything you want is on the other side of fear. (Jack Canfield)
  • Expect More…always believe that something wonderful is about to happen. (unknown)
  • More Generosity…the meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away. (David Viscott)
  • Feel More….be in love with your life, every minute of it. (Jack Kerouac)
  • More Gratitude…appreciate everyone and everything in your life. (Wayne Dyer)
  • More Happiness…life is meant to be fun, and joyous, and fulfilling. (Jim Henson)
  • More Passion…let the beauty of what you love be what you do. (Rumi)
  • Have More Fun…there is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humor. (Charles Dickens)

There are many more quotes within the book that I found to be inspiring. As you prepare to make your list of intentions for your new year, you might want to read through these quotes first, they might just bring about some different thoughts. Nothing is more powerful than inspired based action. (Marilou Butcher Roth)

Wishing you the happiest of New Years!!!

Coaching Corner: Organizing you!

By “Coach” Marilou Butcher Roth

This year is days away from being over, and many of us have been, and are, spending time on holiday enjoyment and preparation. The thought of organization might be the last thought you want to have, however, we are going down that road right now! How great would it be to have new systems in place and have your office organized when 2018 makes its appearance? Let’s do it!

Here are some areas to focus on:

  • Accounting — what type of system do you have in place for tracking tax exemptions and making sure tax money is put aside? If you currently have something that works, great! If not, find a method that works for you. In terms of paying taxes, both state and federal taxes can be paid on-line at any time, so perhaps you pay them at the time of closing rather than quarterly. Here are the links: Federal – EFTPS.gov.  State – www.tax.ohio.gov.
  • Leads — do you have a system to track your leads? If you do, evaluate the system to ensure that it is working in a way that is easy for you. If you do not, please set this up as soon as possible — you will be glad you did!
  • Finding new business — do you have a plan for how you will generate new business in 2018? Is it complete? Do you feel excited when you think about it, or experience a sense of dread? If dread is your answer, think about another method of generating the business you want to see in the coming year.
  • Your office space — whether you work from home or the office (or both), is your space supporting your most efficient work time, or are you moving piles around your desk on a regular basis? Please take the time to go through what is on your desk, in your desk drawers as well as the rest of your work space. Create an environment that inspires you, it makes such a difference!
  • Your wardrobe — I know this may not seem to fit with the others, but you want to have the clothes that look and feel the best to you!
  • Your mental attitude — how can you create some structure that supports a positive and healthy attitude? Having your head in the best space possible leads to success in all that you do!

These are just a few places where organization can assist you, there may be more that you come up with on your own. Be easy about this, and be persistent. Systems and structure can be extremely supportive to you both professionally and personally!

Coaching Corner: Gearing up for the new year (aka, back to basics)

By “Coach” Marilou Butcher Roth

This is such a great time of year to reorganize and realign, determining what has worked this year and what hasn’t. And, more importantly, what you want to see next year, because it is truly right around the corner. It is easy to fall into our old patterns, and this year I want to revisit the basics from a more conscious state of mind. Allow me to tell you a story…

Years ago, there was a contest at the brokerage where I worked that totally shifted how I did my business. Now, I was one of those somewhat cynical people who didn’t really buy into contests, as they seemed silly to me. So, for one to impact me in such a favorable way, says a lot for this particular contest. The rules were simple — you needed one sale and one listing each month for a year, and if achieved you would receive a “Consistency Award” at the annual meeting. Up until this point, I was consistently inconsistent, with great sales one month and perhaps nothing for a couple of months after that. Consistency would indeed be great, so I set out to achieve my desired award. On a small index card which I kept in plain sight I listed the 12 months down the left side and had two headings at the top, one for sales and one for listings — easy so far, right?

What I found very early on was that my focus changed and I wanted to be able to put a checkmark in each of the appropriate spaces — and checkmark I did! There were even a couple of times where I got to the very end of the month without my much needed mark and would find myself speaking internally that I must have the listing or the sale for that month. Strangely, something would present itself to allow me the thrill of the mark.

Now, all of this might sound super silly to you, and perhaps you are correct, but it worked! I believe that focus and desire will impact anything you set your mind to. This may or may not be appealing to you, and I say, what do you have to lose? Its not like the set up is strenuous.

This is an exercise that is very basic, and this is a perfect time to get back to the basics. So get to it!
