Coaching Corner: Be you!

By “Coach” Marilou Butcher Roth

Earlier this week I attended the funeral service for a classmate who had passed away. In attendance at the visitation were several other classmates, as well as neighborhood friends from many years ago. I told my husband it was like a weird game of chicken — I would see someone, make eye contact with them and then we would both look rather quizzically at each other until one of us got brave enough to ask if they were the person we thought. So strange!!

Many of the people there I had not seen in several decades and everyone I spoke with was retired. I was asked by several the normal question of “what do you do?” After a few rounds of this, I realized I was hanging out there on my own.

Upon leaving the visitation, I not only felt the sadness of my classmate’s passing but also had this strange sense of feeling like I was from another planet…and it was not the retirement planet! Old habits die hard, and just being in the midst of these long ago friends, took me back mentally to that time. Relatively quickly, I rebounded and had such a lovely awareness of how beautifully each of us were being ourselves.

Sure, when you are going through elementary and high school, feeling part of the group is extremely important. But at this age, appreciating your individuality is much more of a fit. This week I invite you to identify and appreciate those aspects of yourself that make you YOU!

That’s all its about really, being the BEST YOU possible!!!

Coaching Corner: Freedom vs. routine

By “Coach” Marilou Butcher Roth

We recently celebrated our country’s birthday, our collective freedom. We all love the idea of being and feeling free, don’t we? So, how does freedom fit in with the idea of a routine? Routines equal structure and discipline, which appear to be contrary to our individual freedom!

Think about it though…first, we get to determine which routines we wish to incorporate into our everyday lives. This might be about exercise, finding new business, or perhaps a morning practice that sets the tone for our day ahead. WE get to CHOOSE!

Second, think about how establishing this particular routine will be beneficial in your life — even going so far as how it might bring you more freedom! Let’s use the three above hypothetical routines as examples:

EXERCISE — you establish a consistent routine of exercise. This might be stretching morning and evening. It could be daily cardio or yoga. Again, you get to choose! You begin to notice an increase in your energy and more flexibility in your body. Can you imagine how much more free you feel as you move through your day?

FINDING NEW BUSINESS  no way, you say! Think again! Remember the part about being able to choose? Well, let’s put it into play. How do you want to find new business? What group of people would you most enjoy working with? How can you create as much fun and consistency with finding the people that most need and value the service you provide? Instead of this being a chore, this can become something you actually look forward to. When you alleviate the guilty feelings that you are not doing anything to generate new business, you will indeed feel a sense of freedom! And…your financial freedom can come into play as well!

MORNING PRACTICE — this is an uncomfortable subject for some. And, again, YOU get to choose. There are countless ways to enjoy that time early in the morning. Even if you take five minutes to sit quietly and breathe. This time is for you — it will set the tone for the rest of your day. If you get up and hit the floor running, I can pretty much guarantee the race of the day will continue. If you get up and take a few minutes (or more) for yourself, you will find your day to be more easeful. Having an easeful, more peaceful day to me is indeed freedom!

Happy choosing!

Coaching Corner: Beauty and your beast

By “Coach” Marilou Butcher Roth

Today is a good day! Yesterday, however, sucked! For most of the day, I felt cranky and uncomfortable in my own skin. This may feel familiar to you as well. The bigger problem was that I was feeling agitated by how I felt, so it just got worse! This is how things work — when we continue to put our attention on something we do not like, it just gets bigger! The good news is that it works in the positive as well. But apparently I was not having any of it yesterday!

So, you might ask, what needs to happen when we are having one of those days? Well, if you can recognize it soon enough, often times you can talk, breathe or move yourself back into a better feeling place. If it has progressed beyond being able to accomplish that, your best bet is to just go with it — own the feeling without pushing against it and most often, there will be a shift that occurs.

We all have good sides and not so good sides — just go ahead and admit it! When you can do that, you can observe your “beast” without judgement and can actually move to a place where you can even find amusement!

So go have yourself a great day…………or not!!! Either way, no judgement!

Coaching Corner: Feeling overwhelmed?

By “Coach” Marilou Butcher Roth

Several conversations with clients this week have been around the feeling of overwhelm with the amount of work they have before them. Such a double-edged sword, isn’t it? We want the business and when it comes, it can create a whole new dilemma. Let’s see if we can break this down in short and simple terms because chances are if you are feeling overwhelmed, you won’t spend a lot of time reading blogs!

  1. Develop a mind set of ease, relaxation and simplicity. What are your overriding thoughts when you wake up in the morning? Is your first impulse to move quickly to get to the myriad of tasks that await you? If so, please DO NOT! Take a few moments and allow your body to adjust to the new day. Stretch, breath and set a clear intention of whatever quality feels best to you to permeate the day — you can use any or all of the ones above (ease, relaxation or simplicity) or you may have one that feels better to you.
  2. Sit down and really determine what MUST be done today. Part of the overwhelming feeling comes from what I call “mental clutter.” This part is self-imposed. As you go over your day, make the shortest list you can muster of your absolutes of the day and write them down. Another way to play with this is to write everything down that is hanging over your head and then highlight the ones that need to happen today. Actually, that is what has been working for me.
  3. Throughout the day, take brief moments to stretch, breathe and recommit to your intention. If new tasks present themselves, make the determination of when they need to happen and then stay on task with your original list.
  4. DO NOT work up until the moment you go to bed. Allow yourself at least a few minutes to relax, stretch and breathe. This is not time to watch the news or some violent TV show. This is your time to unwind from the day. If you can find 30 minutes that would be ideal, but I will take what I can get. Think about setting another intention for a sound, restful sleep, waking up in the morning ready for all of the wonderful activities you have before you.

There you go! Hopefully this will help create some ease within your busy schedule!

Coaching Corner: Are you ready?

By “Coach” Marilou Butcher Roth

Currently, in our household, we have a new, healthier way of eating going on. And, although both my husband and I have enjoyed the benefits of eating in a way that supports our physical bodies, there is a LOT of preparation that needs to occur. I am finding that I have now (finally) have a system down so this has become much, much easier. Don’t worry, today’s post is not about telling you to take on eating in this way. It is, however, about how preparation is key with most everything we do.

Think about it — look at the items that you undertake each day. Would there be a benefit to creating a system to assist you? If you really look, I believe the answer in most cases would be “yes!” Look at your lead follow up system (or lack thereof), for example , and determine if there is a way to ensure that those precious leads do not slip by.

Or what about finding new business? Is this something that happens “when you have time?” Well, that might be a challenge! What about preparing for a listing or buyer consultation — do you know how to prepare, or do you just pull items together when you have an appointment?

Planning ahead will create more ease, more time and more success!!! You will feel more confident in each undertaking, which by its very nature, will generate more good things coming your way.

This week, make a list of what activities would be better served with some sort of system or preparation in place. And then….get those systems in place!!!
